Our story

Bright Futures began with one family who had nowhere left to call

Bright Futures Kids Foundation started in 2014 when two neighborhood caseworkers, Elena Marsh and Dr. Ray Caldwell, covered a single month of rent for a mother and her three children so the kids would not change schools mid-year. That one decision turned into a volunteer network, then a registered nonprofit built on a simple belief: hope starts here, with help that arrives before a child's life comes apart.

Today the same urgency drives four connected programs — emergency financial assistance, counseling and mental health care, healthcare access, and education and tutoring — delivered by staff who still answer the phone themselves.

Mission & values

What is the mission of Bright Futures Kids Foundation?

Our mission is to give vulnerable young people a real chance at a better future, starting with the emergency they are facing today. When a family loses housing, a prescription goes unfilled, or a child falls behind at school, we move money, counseling, healthcare access, and tutoring to them fast. Hope starts here means something practical: a child should never lose years of their life to a crisis that lasted a few weeks.

Four values decide how we spend every dollar and every hour. They are the questions our caseworkers ask before they approve aid, and the standard our donors can hold us to.

Our caseworkers meet families where they already are — in schools, clinics, and community centers — so help arrives before a crisis becomes permanent.

Compassion

We start by listening. Every family that contacts us speaks with a person, not a form letter, and we ask what the child actually needs before we decide what we can fund.

Dignity

Asking for help should never cost a family their privacy or their pride. Aid is delivered quietly and directly, and no child is ever used as a fundraising prop without their family's consent.

Urgency

Emergency aid is reviewed within 72 hours because an eviction notice and a missed semester do not wait for a committee. Speed is a service we owe the children we serve.

Community

No single organization lifts a child out of crisis alone. We work alongside teachers, school counselors, pediatric clinics, and neighborhood partners so that one request for help opens the door to everything a family qualifies for — not just the one thing they knew to ask about.

Our history

How did Bright Futures Kids Foundation begin?

Bright Futures started in 2009 with a single emergency fund and one promise: no child in our community would lose their school year to a crisis their family could not control. What began as rent help for four families has grown into four connected programs — emergency aid, counseling, healthcare access, and tutoring — serving children across the Midwest and Southeast. Every milestone below came from donors deciding that hope starts here.

  1. 2009

    Founded around one emergency fund

Two teachers and a pediatric nurse pooled $4,800 to keep four families housed through the winter. Those first grants set the rule we still follow: aid is approved in days, not months.

  2. 2013
    Counseling joined the emergency response

Caseworkers kept meeting children who needed more than a check. We added licensed therapists to the team so a family in crisis could get mental health support in the same visit as financial help.

  3. 2016

    Tutoring and healthcare access opened

Partner clinics agreed to see our referred children at no cost, and a volunteer reading hour became a year-round tutoring program. For the first time, one child could receive all four kinds of support.

  4. 2020

    Pandemic response tripled our reach

When schools closed, we shipped laptops, hotspots, and grocery cards to 1,900 households in eleven weeks. Monthly donors made that speed possible, and recurring giving has anchored our budget ever since.

  5. Today

Four programs, one continuous plan for each child

More than 3,200 monthly donors now fund emergency aid, counseling, healthcare access, and education for children in crisis, with 87 cents of every dollar going directly to programs.

The people behind the work

Who guides the programs at Bright Futures Kids Foundation?

A small, hands-on team of eleven staff and more than ninety trained volunteers runs every Bright Futures program. The people below approve emergency aid requests, sit with families in counseling intake, book clinic appointments, and match students with tutors. Most of them came to this work through the same neighborhoods we serve.

Founder

Dana Whitfield

Executive Director

Dana started Bright Futures in 2009 after fourteen years as a school social worker, where she kept meeting families one unpaid bill away from losing everything. She still personally reviews every emergency aid case over $1,000 and leads the Friday caseworker huddle.

Clinical Director, Counseling and Mental Health

Priya is a licensed child psychologist who built our counseling program from two volunteer therapists into a network of eighteen clinicians. She keeps the waitlist under two weeks, which she considers the single most important number on her desk.

What the team believes
“No child should have to wait for a committee. If a family calls us on Monday with nowhere to sleep, we answer that Monday.”

Marcus Bell

Manager, Emergency Financial Assistance

Marcus designed the 72-hour aid process that moves rent, utility, and prescription help to a family within three days of their first call. He grew up in foster care in the same county and says the paperwork should never be the hard part.

Healthcare Access Coordinator Luis Ortega walking a mother and child into a pediatric clinic appointment
Programs

Luis Ortega

Coordinator, Healthcare Access

Luis handles insurance enrollment, clinic scheduling, and the rides that make appointments possible. A former community health navigator, he speaks Spanish and Portuguese and sits in on visits when a parent asks him to.

Programs

Aisha Thompson

Lead, Education and Tutoring

Aisha recruits and trains the volunteer tutors who meet students four afternoons a week, and she tracks reading and math growth for every child enrolled. She taught fifth grade for nine years before joining the foundation.

Board, volunteers, and donor care

A volunteer board of nine community members — including two parents served by our programs — approves the budget and reviews outcomes every quarter. Our two-person donor care team answers receipt and recurring-gift questions within one business day.
